A quote from a recent issue of the New York Times:

"The modern version of the sport did not originate in the Southwest, where many of its practitioners now go to hone their skills, but in France and Spain in the 1970's. It came to this country about 15 years ago ... "

I've heard and read comments like this before. The notion that canyoneering CAME to the U.S. from overseas is totally bogus. For the record: canyoneering developed in the American Southwest totally independent of any foreign influence. People like Steve Allen, Michael Kelsey, Dave Black and Dennis Turville have been exploring the canyons of the Colorado Plateau (southern Utah and northern Arizona) for several decades.
