It's been nearly two years since I traded in my Petzl Canyon harness for a Petzl Falcon. I tend to hang in my harness for prolonged periods during courses and wanted some extra padding. As soon as I bought the new harness, I asked Tom for a custom-made Scuttlebutt. Custom because the extra wide waist belt and leg loops of the Falcon won't fit a standard Scuttlebutt.
My Scuttlebutt's service ended today. The straps that connect the Scuttlebutt to the harness waist belt finally wore through. I inspected the Scuttlebutt as I removed it from my harness. It has seen a great deal of abuse in many canyons over the past two years, but held up remarkably well. There is a distinct contrast between the vibrant green on the inside and the seriously scuffed exterior. Although it has a couple small tears, it did it's job well. The leg loops of my harness haven't seen daylight in two years and look brand new.
After I put my harness back on sans Scuttlebutt I realized it had provided another benefit. My harness was much more comfortable with the Scuttlebutt. Without it, my leg loops tend to slide down. Not much, just enough to make it uncomfortable while rappelling. No matter how much I cinched down the leg loop buckles or adjusted the elestic bands in the back, my leg loops still slid down. This never happened with my Scuttlebutt.
Tom, make another for me. Quick!
