Rich,

On the techniques page of the ACA website it mentions a Canyoneering book due out Fall of 2004. Could you give an update on when this book will be available?

Hey guys,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I wasn't ignoring you. Just wanted to wait until I could answer definitively.

The book is being published in 3 volumes. Volume 1 covers our Technical Canyoneering Course curriculum for canyons up to 3B. Volume 2 covers our Advanced Canyoneering Course -- canyons up to 4C -- and Canyon Rescue Course curriculums. The third book will be titled "Anchors for Canyoneering" and will provide numerous anchor examples.

Volume 1, version 1.0, will start shipping in early January. It is 8.5X11, black and white, spiral bound. You can order your copy online now at:

No exact dates, but it won't be too long. Original intent was to produce one large book, so much of the material for all 3 is already done.

I think someone should send a complimentary copy to ATS...

Not sure about ATS, I just want a copy of the book. :D

A week ago, preparing for a trip in a canyon with high water current, I remembered that one drop is best done as a guided rappel. I realized that (to my knowledge) nobody on the trip had sent one up before except for me, but I haven't tightened one since I took Rich's class what, 6 or 7 years ago? And I've completely forgotten how to do it. So I set up a few anchors in my yard, and came up with a way to tighten them, but I have no clue if it is the correct or best way to do it. A reference book would have been really nice.

And other concepts, like deviations? Forget it, I've forgotten and have no hope of figuring it out without a reference book. And a deviation would have come in handy in a new canyon we explored a month or two ago.

So it would be really nice to have a reference guide to use for practice and refreshing memory. The next best thing is On Rope, but it doesn't have many of the canyon-specific techniques.

So how bout it, Rich? Are you still planning on publishing a book? If so, when? Or is the project dead?

The book was on its way to the printer, but we had to stop the presses to add a new chapter on WCCM.

Seriously, the project certainly isn´t dead. I´ve been saying ¨It´s almost finished¨ for a long time. That´s true, it´s almost finished. If I could just find a week of time with no interuptions.

Hi Rich, sounds very cool! I hope it appears soon. It would be a valuable asset for both the ACA and the canyoneering community as a whole.

If you need a hand with it, or some photos of bad anchors/techniques/action shots/whatever, drop me a line. I'd love to see this project complete!

OK. No one talk to Rich for the next week. Actually give him an extra day on top of that week (for doing such a good job).

Probably a sore subject by now but....is there going to be a Book? Or is the Dave Black book, when printed, going to be it?

Hell, I'm no longer even living in a state or even region of the US where I can canyoneer. Threw money away preordering the book that never was and I lost $100 for two of the canyoneering seminars (a birthday gift from my wife) when I couldn't attend due to a sudden illness and couldn't track down Rich ahead of time because he was already on the road to the rendezvous. No refund, just a credit that I will never get to use.
Service around here leaves a lot to be desired.

Sorry you feel that way, Scott. I made it clear to everyone who pre-ordered the book that I would give an instant refund to anyone who asked. Virtually everyone told me they wanted to keep pressure on me to finish. If you want a refund, all you have to do is ask. Send your mailing address to me at rcwild at canyoneering dot net

I think most people understand that we must have some kind of cancelation and refund policy for our courses. If we hold a space for someone and they don't show up, we can't sell that space to someone else. If we break even with 8 students and only 7 show up, we lose money and would have been better off canceling the course. That's not fair to the 7 people who wanted to participate, took time off work, made travel arrangements, etc.

We have always given refunds to people who cancel 30 days in advance because we still have time to sell their spot to someone else. If a cancelation is received less than 30 days out, we will give a credit. If a cancelation is received less than 10 days out, our policy is to give no refunds or credits. I make exceptions if there is a waiting list for the course and we can fill the spot, even with such short notice.

Our courses require a non-refundable $50 deposit. When you told me you tried to reach me, I made an exception and offered you a full credit for the deposits. That was going above and beyond policy in the interest of service.
