Benson Creek is a fun half day adventure for the summer time. Photogenic

Rating: 3B II
Time Required: ~3-5 Hours
Longest Rappel: 100 feet

Permit Information
No permit required

Camping/Lodging
Within a few miles of Parowan and Brian Head

Preferred Season
Summer/fall. Spring may have snow, high water flow and may be uncomfortably cold.

Water Concerns
All rappels follow directly down the course of waterfalls. The amount of water may vary. There should never be more than ankle deep pools at the base of the rappels.

Special Challenges
Moderate route finding. Loose rock and steep inclines on the approach hike

Equipment Suggestions
Standard technical gear (harness, descending device, helmet, multiple locking carabineers, slings, etc), 200’ rope, ~ 30 feet of webbing, rap rings/links

Topographic Maps
- -

Directions to Trailhead
From I-15, take the Parowan exit and follow the signs through Parowan toward Brian Head. Shortly after mile marker 8, look for the Hidden Haven trailhead on the left. The parking area will accommodate several vehicles.

Approach
Follow the trail from the trailhead. At the first fork, bear right and cross the bridge. At the second fork, stay left. Stay left at the third fork. Within a few yards you will see a picnic table and benches. The trail to the left will be your return route when you finish the canyon. Stop here to scan the ridge in front of you for your route to the top. Look for a steep talus slope through the trees. Your route up this talus slope will include a short section of class 3 climbing. Once you are above the talus, continue up the ridge through the trees and look for an old over-grown road bed. Follow this road bed for a few hundred yards until you find a way down to your left. If you start down too early, you will encounter the rim of the canyon below. Not really a problem. Just follow the rim up canyon, but not too close.

Description
The technical section of Benson Creek has four rappels. The first rappel is the longest at just over 100 feet. With a little rope stretch, you can do it with a 200 foot rope. The anchor for this rappel is a large ponderosa pine on canyon left. The second rappel is a 2-stage rappel that drops about 8 feet, then another 30 feet around the corner. Chockstone anchors were always possible here, but there are now two [poorly placed] bolts. The third and fourth rappels are approximately 30 feet each with stout trees available for anchors.

Exit
Once down the final rappel, follow the stream down canyon until you reach the area with picnic table and benches. Follow the trail back to your car.

Rich hangs around a lot of sketchy places with sketchy people, so--when he got some info from his neighbors, cousins, moms 3rd brother twice removed--that he met behind a barn in Pioche Nevada at a cockfighting event-- of course it was viewed with a little skepticism.

But the info was accurate and we have a new trail into Benson Crick.

On the last fork of the mentioned trail, go right and follow it to--N37 46.303,w112 50.257
At this junction follow the trail to the left and proceed up the hill to--N37 45.971,w112 50.347
At this spot go left following a faint trail that becomes an old logging road eventually, from the previous coordinate the hiking is all level or downhill. You'll come around a hill and be looking down into Benson Cr.
Head towards N 37 46.254,w112 49.853 this is the first rappel. Theres considerable bushwacking getting down to the entry.

Also there were 2 bolts that someone had placed quite awhile ago that were sketchy at best, these have been replaced.

We did Benson Creek yesterday. We used the new route up insteed of going straight up the hill. I like this route better. It is still a steep hike for awhile, but at least the ground below you is solid ground.
Water flow was a little less than my first time back in June.

A small rattlesnake at the bottom of the first rappel here.
just a heads up, very close to where you land on that rappel.

He must have fallen in from above. Didn't see him there on Thursday. Water was running at just a trickle.

We did Benson Creek on the 11th of July with 9 people (scout group). We did not see a snake then. It must have fallen from the top.

I'm here to say, YES, there is a small rattler after the first Falls. I went down on the 10th and laid my head about a foot from it to snap some pics. I can add a picture if you'd like. He seemed to be more scared of us then we were of him. I did hear he was still there last Saturday (18th).

Interesting ...

I was in Benson with a group of travel writers on Thursday the 16th. We were not looking for a rattlesnake, but there were as many as 6 or 7 people all on that landing at one time. Milling about, squatting to take photos, belaying, pulling and coiling rope, moving things in and out of their packs, etc. If anyone noticed a rattlesnake, they would have let everyone known.

Additions:

1) The ridge we climbed from the picnic table is to the right when facing the mountain. Stay to the right side of the talus field.

2) As you climb up this face you will ask yourself how the hell a road can be up here. When you find the "overgrown road bed" you will again wonder if it really is a road, or just the express lane of a game trail. Just sayin...

3) As of the second week of July 2010 there was a series of orange streamers tied to trees to guide us to the first rap once on top of the ridge-line. There was even a 6"x6" little sign with an arrow that pointed us to "Dave's Drop"- whoever that is.

4) Took two of us 2:40 from the parking lot and back. We don't move too fast and all we had for directions was Rich's original post.

I took some guys from the Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR) through Benson. Some beta sources state that the area is owned/managed by the Forest Service. Not true. I used to think it was BLM. Not true. It is owned and managed by DNR. They are developing the area for habitat education.

If you haven't been there in awhile, you will notice major changes on your next visit. There are more trails. Old trails are being repaired. Some of the trails will soon include marker posts that correspond to printed material explaining the various types of vegetation. An amphitheater is under construction for presentations. Primary users of the interpretive trails will likely be kids from nearby schools; Cedar City and Parowan.

We approached using the trail that goes south, then climbs to the top of the ridge. About half-way we encountered a rock blocking the trail. A rock the size of a car. One of the guys on our trip was doing trail work there three weeks ago when a 4.3 earthquake hit. The earthquake caused a large section of rock to shear off the cliffs. We followed the 100-yard path that was cleared by this rock toward the cliff. It broke several trees like they were toothpicks. Near the base of the cliff we found a crater where another rock hit, then rolled another 20 yards. More broken trees. The damage caused by the rock fall was impressive. Mama nature has some serious power.

Went through Benson Creek yesterday. There are indeed more trails. MANY more. Took a nice scenic hike...

At the first fork you still turn right, then a second right(this is different), followed by lefts, according to my notes. Also, webbing replaced on all the raps other than the first one.

Thanks you Rich for hosting these forums, they are a great resource for those of us looking for spots!

I went through Benson Creek yesterday afternoon on a spur of the moment trip. There was snow anywhere, and the weather/temperature were beautiful. The water was chilly, but bearable. Things look great.

Also, we found a rope and one half of a very nice pair of shoes. If you're missing either of these things from Benson Creek, get in touch with me.
