Not as popular as its well known brother to the east, Egypt 2 is no less worthy of interest. A few rappels, lots of tight narrows, and some good downclimbing.
Rating: 3A III
Time Required: ~4-6 Hours
Longest Rappel: ~80 Feet (300 Feet for Big Entry)
Permit Information
No permits required
Camping/Lodging
The town of Escalante offers motels, restaurants and camping. There is great primitive camping all along the last few miles of the Egypt road and at the Egypt Bench trailhead.
Preferred Season
Spring to fall, summer OK but can be hot.
Water Concerns
Will likely be dry. Do not enter when rain is threatening
Special Challenges
Egypt 2 is in a natural anchors area. Moderate anchor skills are required. No bolts please.
Equipment Suggestions
Standard Technical Gear (harness, descending device, helmet, multiple locking carabineers, slings, etc), 200’ rope (and additional 300’ rope is required for the Big Entry), ~ 40 feet of webbing, rap rings/links, ascenders
Topographic Maps

Directions to Trailhead
From the town of Escalante head east on Utah Hwy. 12 about five miles to the Hole-in-the-Rock road. Turn right and head east down the Hole-in-the-Rock road about 16.5 miles to where the Egypt road takes off to the left. Turn here and proceed down the Egypt road roughly eight miles to where it crosses a slickrock dry wash. There is a big drop a short distance to your right that is easily visible from the road. This is the start of Egypt 2. A little over mile down this road is the parking lot at the Egypt Bench trailhead.
