The most popular of the "Egypt's" Egypt 3 combines hiking, down-climbing, rappelling and swimming through seemingly endless narrows. An area classic.

Rating: 3B III
Time Required: ~6-8 Hours
Longest Rappel: ~80 Feet

Permit Information
No permits required

Camping/Lodging
The town of Escalante offers motels, restaurants and camping. There is great primitive camping all along the last few miles of the Egypt road and at the Egypt Bench trailhead.

Preferred Season
Spring to fall, summer OK but can be hot.

Water Concerns
You will encounter wading and possible swimming. Do not enter when rain is threatening

Special Challenges
Egypt 3 is in a natural anchors area. Moderate anchor skills are required. No bolts please. The water in the final slot can be very cold. Down-climbing problems can generally be spotted or belayed for less experienced climbers.

Equipment Suggestions
Standard Technical Gear (harness, descending device, helmet, multiple locking carabineers, slings, etc), 50 M rope, ~ 40 feet of webbing, rap rings/links, ascenders, wetsuit, dry bags

Directions to Trailhead
From the town of Escalante head east on Utah Hwy. 12 about five miles to the Hole-in-the-Rock road. Turn right and head east down the Hole-in-the-Rock road about 16.5 miles to where the Egypt road takes off to the left. Turn here and proceed down the Egypt road roughly nine miles to where the road passes over a culvert in a wash that is the beginning of Egypt 3.

Description: Standard Route
Tight narrows, easy fifth class climbing, rappelling and swimming.

After much negotiation of tight narrow slots the canyon opens for a bit then begins to slot back up again. Here you will find some small natural bridges. The third bridge will be your anchor for the last rappel.

Tie your rope to this bridge and leave it there to be picked up on your return hike out. Do not pull the rope after rappelling into the final slot. Look closely and you will see grooves worn in this bridge by thoughtless canyoneers in the past. Please take care of this beautiful natural wonder. It is very easy to pick up your rope on the hike out and besides, why drag your rope through the final narrows if you don't have to.

Exit
Egypt 3 exits at Twenty five Mile Wash. Turn left and work you way up slickrock slabs and ledges to the rim and where you left your rope fixed. Retrieve your rope and follow Egypt 3 along its eastern flank back to your parked car.

Variation
You can skip the final rappel and slot by exiting the canyon there.
