A beautiful, deep canyon that drains into the narrows, including a bit of downclimbing and scrambling.
Rating: 3B III
Time Required: ~7-9 Hours
Longest Rappel: ~20 Feet
Permit Information
Permits required and can be obtained at the Zion NP Visitor Center.
Camping/Lodging
There are campgrounds in Zion NP, numerous hotels in nearby Springdale and plenty of primitive camping in the vicinity.
Preferred Season
Summer and fall, when rain isn’t threatening
Water Concerns
Wading up to waist deep, possible short swims
Special Challenges
Water can be very cold. Some downclimbs may be difficult for beginners and require a rappel
Equipment Suggestions
Standard Technical Gear (harness, descending device, helmet, multiple locking carabineers, slings, etc) for beginners, 50’ rope, ~20’ of webbing, rap rings/links, dry bags
Topographic Maps
USGS 7.5/ Maps ‘Temple of Sinawava’ and ‘Clear Creek Mountain’
Directions to Trailhead
It is strongly recommended to set up a car shuttle for this canyon. Leave a car at the park headquarters. Upon your return, you take a shuttle bus from the Temple of Sinawava to the headquarters, and then drive your car back to the Orderville trailhead to retrieve your other vehicle.
From highway 9, 2.5 miles east of the Zion park's east entrance, turn north onto the North Fork road. Follow the road for 11.8 miles (becomes dirt after a while) until you reach an unmarked dirt road turning off of your left. Follow this road for a quarter mile to a corral area. Park here.

Approach
Continue hiking (or driving with 4wd, if you are comfortable) down the dirt road past the corral. After two miles or so the road ends. Hike into the wash and walk downstream. At a big drop, look to the left for a trail that leads you down a steep dirt slope to the bottom of the drop. Continue down canyon.

Description: Standard Route
Lots of chokestones to downclimb (many have bolted anchors for your rope, to use either as a handline or to rappel if you choose). A log jam or two. Some fun swims. The lower canyon has running water.
Exit
After Orderville reaches the Zion Narrows, hike downstream a few miles to the Temple of Sinawava and take the shuttle bus back to your car.
