An amazing and beautiful canyon, with a short approach right off the highway. Perfect to fill out a day in the North Wash

Rating: 3B I
Time Required: ~1.5 - 3 hours
Longest Rappel: ~50 ft

Permit Information
None required

Camping/Lodging
Plenty of primitive camping along Hwy 95. Sandthrax campground is just south of mile marker 28, approx 2 miles north of the trailhead

Preferred Season
Spring, fall and winter. Summer is very hot

Water Concerns
Most of the canyons in this area drain water very quickly. This canyon has water marks that indicate water could be chest to neck deep for some, possibly very short swims, or possibly dry the whole way through

Special Challenges
Natural anchor skills will be required.

Equipment Suggestions
Standard Technical Gear (harness, descending device, helmet, multiple locking carabineers, slings, etc), 100’ rope, ~ 50 feet of webbing, rap rings/links, ascenders, bring as small of a pack as possible

Topographic Maps
USGS 7.5 ‘Hite North’

Directions to Trailhead
From Hanksville UT, head south on UT 95 towards Hite. The trailhead for the approach hike is around 1 mile north of the Hog Springs picnic area. If you are heading north from Hog Springs, you will see the bottom of Morocco on the right, and it may not look like much of a canyon. Continue a short distance north and you will see a larger looking canyon on the right. Park off the road at the bottom of this larger canyon. (Trailhead Coordinates - N37 58.648, W110 29.520)

Approach
From the parking spot just off the highway, make your way up the slick rock slope on the right and head south along the rim until you can turn the corner and head in towards the head of the slot. There shouldn’t be much exposure or climbing.

Description
From the head of the canyon, rappel, down climb, and enjoy. You will encounter 5 or so rappels. This canyon can get pretty skinny like most North Wash canyons. Nothing the larger canyoneers need to worry about, but you will appreciate long sleeves and pants. The final rappel puts you just a few hundred yards from the road. For a short canyon, this is definitely worth it. Nothing in this canyon is very difficult, so it is a good canyon for beginners.

Exit
Head towards Hwy 95 and turn right (north) and you will get back to the car in just a few minutes.
