Another great canyon right off the highway to fill out your day in the North Wash

Rating: 3B II
Time Required: ~2-3.5 hours
Longest Rappel: ~60 ft

Permit Information
None required

Camping/Lodging
Plenty of primitive camping along Hwy 95. Sandthrax campground is just south of mile marker 28, approx 3 miles north of the trailhead

Preferred Season
Spring, fall and winter. Summer is very hot

Water Concerns
Most of the canyons in this area drain water very quickly. This canyon has water marks that indicate water could be up to chest deep for some, possibly short swims, or possibly dry the whole way through

Special Challenges
Natural anchor skills will be required. The approach involves a short section of approx. 5.6 climbing, with some additional moderate exposure to gain the canyon rim.

Equipment Suggestions
Standard Technical Gear (harness, descending device, helmet, multiple locking carabineers, slings, etc), 120’ rope, ~ 50 feet of webbing, rap rings/links, ascenders, bring as small of a pack as possible

Topographic Maps
USGS 7.5 ‘Hite North’

Directions to Trailhead
From Hanksville UT, head south on UT 95 towards Hite. The canyon is just less than half a mile south of Hog Springs Picnic area. It will be the first canyon you see on the left heading south from Hog Springs, although from the road you cant see the slot- just a rock fall. (Trailhead Coordinates - N37 57.625, W110 29.025)

Approach
From your car, begin boulder hoping up the canyon until you appear to be cliffed out. At the right side there is a short climbing section to get up this edge. Once someone is up, it is easy to drop a rope for those less comfortable with the climbing. At the top of this, head to the left side and scramble up a gulley and back on top of the ridge and keep heading up the slick rock. Continue up until you can find a rim which will lead your way back in towards the head of the slot along the right side of the slick rock.

Description: Standard Route
From the head of the canyon, rappel, down climb, rappel, down climb... Depending on skill you will have 1-6 rappels. This canyon can get pretty skinny like most North Wash canyons. Nothing the larger canyoneers need to worry about, but you will appreciate long sleeves and pants.

Exit
After the final rappel over the small cliff you climbed up, climb down all the boulders again and you will be right back at your car.
