Really beautiful canyon in the rainforest. This is a canyon in the traditional way, as there are not any platforms or cables that you find in the tourist canyons in other parts of Costa Rica. The group needs to hike all the way to the canyon, and then carry all their equipment down, removing their ropes and stuff.

Rating: 3C III
Time Required: ~ 6-8 Hours
Longest Rappel: ~ Feet - Meters

Permit Information
The trails to get to the canyon pass through private property, and arranging with the owner is required before hand.

Camping/Lodging
There are many places to stay in Turrialba, but if you prefer, you can do this a day trip from San Jose, but you will need to start really early to have time to complete the trip.

Preferred Season
Better during the dry season, or with early start during rainy season, always checking the weather.

Water Concerns
Rain in the tropics and specially in Costa Rica could be really strong, and flash floods are possible everywhere around the country. Always check the weather conditions, water shed, and talk with the locals to see the recent weather conditions.

Special Challenges

Equipment Suggestions
Standard Technical Gear (harness, descending device, helmet, multiple locking carabineers, slings, etc), 2 200’ foot ropes, ~50’ of webbing, rap rings/links, ascenders.

Topographic Maps
IGN-CR 1:50.000

Hello,

I am in Costa Rica right now, and will be for the next two weeks. I´m here with friends, and most of us have some significant canyoneering experience, although our time in class C canyons is limited. We´d really like to descend a canyon or two while we are here, but we´re not particularly interested in doing it with a traditional tour guide. Is there a local that could show us around for a discounted fee, or maybe a few easier canyons that we could do ourselves? We´ve got a rope, harnesses, webbing and some hardware on us. Please email me at dezhead2006@yahoo.com.

Thanks,

Ari
