My Impression ;)

A couple months ago I visited the Five.Ten outlet store in Redlands, California, on my way out to Joshua Tree for a weekend of climbing. In a cardboard box on the floor was a selection of water shoes on sale for $18.99. I had really hoped to find a pair of Canyon seconds on clearance but, for $18.99 I didn't think I had a lot to lose so I bought a pair of Five.Tens Nemo's.

It was couple months before I got a chance to put them to work in Bailey Canyon. On that day I used a pair of Tiva's for the approach and switched to the Nemo's when I entered the watercourse. I remember thinking that the rock in that canyon wasn't very slippery. Could it be the Nemo’s? Last weekend to use them in the Salmone Jug. This time I used the Nemo's for both the watercourse and the exit hike.

While the shoes have their shortcomings on the trail shoe they are excellent in the watercourse. They have the feel of a good approach shoe on rock and a good diving booty in water. While their not horrible on the trail I'd be inclined to switch to another shoe for long approaches and exits. I feared the shoes rigid toe box design may give me trouble on the trail and I was right. Although I wore a thin liner sock, I did develop of small blister on the top of one of my toes during the exit hike from the Salmone Jug. In the shoes defense it was reasonably comfortable for the hike and had not been completely broken-in. A thicker sock may have solved the problem also.

I think the Five.Ten Canyon’s beefier construction would probably be superior for long drier canyons but the Nemo’ lightweight and snug fit make it superior for swimming and boulder hopping in the watercourse.

My Rating’s
Overall B+
Watercourse A+
Rock B+ (with climbing shoes being an A)
Trail C (with good hiking boots being an A)

Overall I'm quite impressed with my Nemo’s and will gladly pay the full $89 price tag and it's time to replace them. :D
