Palouse canyon is in southeastern Washington in Palouse Falls State Park. This spectacular waterfall is in a beautiful and geologically interesting basalt canyon. Several different lava flows are exposed in the canyon. These are often separated by large sloping ledges. Normally canyoneering involves following the water course of a river or creek. One can certainly do that here, but it is more interesting to explore this canyon from the many sloping ledges that separate the basalt layers on the canyon walls. The upper most layer is penetrated by very narrow and steep slots that provide interesting access routes to and from the canyon rim. Many possible routes and loops are possible.
