Thornton Creek is a challenging canyon which should only be attempted in low water conditions by canyoneers who are comfortable rappelling and swimming through fast water. There are numerous waterfalls from 10 to 30 feet high. A typical rappel involves going down a waterfall, swimming through a pothole with strong current and continuing the rappel down another one or two waterfalls. Setting the rope length for the first rappeller is frequently not feasible. The creek drops very steeply. The rappels typically lead directly to the next, with little if any flat sections between. Despite the difficulties, Thornton Creek is not committing. Escape is easy from numerous points, mostly on the left side.
