Very few people have explored the West Little Owyhee River (also known as Louse Canyon). Those who have been there, describe a place of great beauty with vertical walls, rock towers, caves, clear water and abundant wildlife. It is a tributary of the Owyhee River in the desert country of the southeast corner of the state It has been called the most challenging backpacking trip in Oregon. At over forty miles, it is among the longest, very remote and isolated. There is a brief spring runoff during which hiking is not recommended. In summer and fall there are pools to wade or swim and occasionally boulders to scramble over in the stream bed. It is a good idea to pack your gear in waterproof bags.
