This might be a lame question, in another thread someone mentioned a canyon figure 8 and how its faster (less friction) then standard rig. I searched around online and couldnt find anything. Can someone describe how to rig the canyon?

And any other figure 8 methods ... would be useful, thanks!

Rigging an eight in canyon mode (aka rapid mode) ...

(1) Start with figure eight clipped to carabiner on harness. Carabiner should be clipped into the small hole. Gate facing up.

(2) Feed a bight of rope through the big hole, up from the bottom.

(3) Clip the bight of rope into the carabiner. Lock carabiner.

Petzl Pirana is always rigged in canyon mode, but has a couple "horns" that allow variations to change the amount of friction.

Here is the Petzl data sheet for their fig-8. The top of the second page shows several ways of rigging it. You will probably need to print the data sheet to see the diagrams in enough detail.

Also on this data sheet, 2nd page, 3rd set of diagrams from top, warns of the danger of loading the carabiner gate. This is why some mountaineering groups have at times recommended using a maillon rapide instead of a carabiner.
