Hey there,

does anyone know where to get the Petzl Holzarte (http://www.petzl.com/petzl/Produit?Produit=428&Conseil=&Activite=&Famille=&SousFamille=&News=) here in the U.S.? I've been e-mailing Petzl, and they said they have to special order it from France, which takes about 6-8 weeks. Cost is $36 plus shipping, which is "approximately $7" to my CA address. No discounts on the Holzarte and not on the shipping either, regardless of how many I order.

If anyone is interested in buying directly from Petzl, here is their contact info:

PETZL America
Freeport Center M-7
PO Box 160447
CLEARFIELD
UT 84016
USA
Tel : (801) 926-1500
Fax : (801) 926-1501
E-mail : info@petzl.com
Web : www.petzl.com

I feel a bit ripped off if I order, let's say, 10 of them, and don't get a discount whatsoever.

I'm curious why you are so dedicated to the idea that this harness is a must own. I buy lots of gear just because I want to own it, so I guess that is reason enough for me. Unless you're traveling to lots of wet water destinations they certainly are not my first choice for your avg. CP style canyon.

Petzl Holzarte is not a harness. Just a butt pad for protecting rear of wetsuit. Cheaper to just wear a pair of old shorts over your wetsuit.

Valerie asked about the Holzarte - for several of us here in SoCal - because many of our pairs of shorts and long pants (for poison oak protection) are getting ripped to shreds in our granite canyons.

These will not be just protection for our wetsuits, but also for our clothes.

Trudy already installed a patch in the back of my favorite Ex Officio pants last year after they succumbed to some scree and water slides on San Antonio Creek, so we are hoping that these Holzarte's will hold up fairly well.

And Happy Face pajama bottoms would last about a half hour! :)

In addition, most of our local canyons will have water and waterfalls throughout the summer so we are expecting an above-average amount of butt-sliding this year.

Duh, guess I should have remembered it was the butt protector since I tried to order one last year. :) I'll take one if you order them. Ping me side band for payment and shipping info when the time is right.

The reason discounts are not offered on retail sales is to avoid competing with dealers. If you want to do a group buy w/discount, I suggest you contact a local Petzl dealer and try to work something out.

Contact Ben at the Mountain Shop here in Cedar City. He'll be happy to work out a discount for you since you are all ACA members.

I've given the "cheap shorts" alternative some thought, but I really don't like the idea very much. I'd rather invest once into something that lasts for a long time.

Plus, the Holzarte should come in handy in various other situations as well. I am thinking of snowcamping, snow playing, etc. Of course, if it takes 6-8 weeks to ship, there won't be much snow around... Next year then!

I'll give Ben a call and see what he can do :)

Thanks!
