View Full Version : Need Current Beta - Seven Teacups / Kern River Crossing
I am going camping with my family and another friend’s family, at the Kern River, over Memorial Weekend. While I'm there I'd like to do the Seven Teacups. I'm thinking of bringing 4 teenage boys and the other father. I’m not too worried about getting them down the teacups, but I am worried about the Kern crossing. All beta about the route is welcome, but specifically I need help planning the Kern River crossing. Or is there an alternate route back? Is the crossing impossible due to this year’s high flow? Please help me out!
And finally, if you’re planning to be in the area, are you interested in tagging along?
Thanx

The upper Kern (Forks section) is a serious place right now. Flow rates are currently right around 4,000 CFS.
The river crossing will be an issue with potentially serious consequences should someone be swept away. Dry Meadow Creek joins the main river a short distance above Carson Falls - arguably the biggest rapid on the river (this is Carson Falls @ 1500 CFS..... http://www.sierrasouth.com/krg0005.htm).
Rafters and kayakers love the area at this time of year due to the big rapids. The water is very cold, rising in level as the day progresses and snowmelt increases upstream. My personal opinion is that this crossing, at this time, requires mandatory swiftwater skills - including the appropriate equipment.
Chris B. might have some suggestions on alternative crossing sites, but I am drawing a blank on easy spots.
The Teacups themselves might be seeing pretty heavy flows at that time. You might even find some kayakers (not me - ever) running the drops!

I was across the river from the 7 Teacups last year on May 21st, and the crossing was not very doable then, especially not for kids. I may have tried crossing it with some advanced white water skills, but I certainly wouldn't have gone first.
I would think that in 2 1/2 weeks from now, given the current flow rate, it will be impossible to cross. I hiked the river trail another mile upstream and could not find any spot where you could cross, and downstream, you have the Johnsondale bridge but there is no trail after coming out of the Teacups.
Chris B. is likely chugging margaritas in some Mexican cantina right now (if not now, he will be later tonight), so you won't hear from him until next week.
