Changes in Zion National Park Backcountry Fees and Permit System
According to Zion National Park Superintendent Jock Whitworth, a new
backcountry permit and fee system will be instituted starting January
15, 2004. These changes are being put into effect to make the system
more efficient for visitors to use. As a result of the changes,
reservations will be available for a greater number of areas. In
addition, Zion will be the first area within the National Park
Service to allow visitors to obtain permits over the internet.
To defray the costs of managing Zion's backcountry, backcountry fees
are increasing in 2004. Backcountry fees are based on the following
group size.
Party size 1-2 persons $10.00
Party size 3-7 persons $15.00
Party size 8-12 persons $20.00
The popularity of the sport of canyoneering has grown dramatically in
recent years. In 2003, Zion instituted use limits for all of the
park's technical slot canyons. Use limits also exist for the Zion
Narrows, and many of the park's popular backpacking areas. Park
officials hope that the on-line system will allow visitors to better
plan their trips to Zion.
A lottery system is in place for the Left Fork of North Creek
(Subway) and Mystery Canyon. Lottery applications must be received
three months prior to a trip. On-line calendar reservations are
available for permits not awarded in the lotteries for Subway and
Mystery Canyons. In addition, calendar reservations are also
available for many of Zion's other popular routes including the
Narrows, West Rim, LaVerkin Creek, Orderville Canyon, and Pine Creek.
Calendar reservations become available two months prior to a trip.
Depending on the backcountry area, approximately 50% of permits are
available through a reservation system. The remaining 50% of permits
are available as walk-in permits. Walk-in permits are available the
day before or the day of your trip.
In early February 2004, on-line permits will be available to frequent
Zion visitors.
Information concerning all of these programs is available at the Zion
National Park website www.nps.gov/zion . Additional information can
also be obtained by calling the park's backcountry information line
at 435-772-0170.
