During pothole escape training in Level 1 we fiddled around with my river rescue bag. I always carry a small kayaker-size throw bag with 60 feet of 1/4-inch polypropylene rope. Small, compact. Comes in handy for raising and lowering packs, extending pull lines, etc.

There is a loop tied in the bottom end of the rope that sticks out of a grommetted hole in the bag. We attached a couple of BD Grappling Hooks and heaved it over the edge of the pothole. Very easy to throw substantial distance. Successfully hooked onto something (branches, cracks) 1 out of 3 tosses.
