Anyone explored the 'east fork' of Rubio? I mean the drainage that comes in from canyon left, just as Rubio makes a 90 degree turn right, just a few minutes above where the raps start. I scrambled up a series of small pools and falls to the base of a huge falls, visible from the main canyon and it looks like fun. Judging from the topo, accesss wouldn't be too hard.

Leontine Falls is the falls you describe and can be bushwhacked to the drop in point. Start canyon left below Thalehaha Falls and work your way to the ridgeline. Continue until you see the falls from above (lots of loose stuff on the way in). Anchorage is sketchy and you may need to climb to tree on canyon right (some exposure here). We needed 280 feet of rope including the pull cord and just made it with nothing to spare. It's a fun falls and worth the effort. :)

It looked like somebody had bushwhacked up it...

Did you explore or see anything upcanyon that looked good?

We didn't go much above Leontine but the terrain doesn't look too promising for more falls upcanyon.

as far as above Leontine Falls, the tchester's website says nothing really above that as thats where they take the water out w/ pipes.

I have been to the upper portion of Rubio Cyn......

There are 2 falls up there.

I was with a friend 3-4 times looking for wreckage from a crash in the early 40's

I'd very much like to get into the canyon inbetween the 2 falls and brought rappeling gear when we where there last, but.... my skills in this area are limited to "tag-a-long" rating and decided against it.

Photos from our last trip there on 2005-12-18 (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mattmaxon91040/album?.dir=2c32&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos)

The 1st photo shows my co-explorer at a smaller waterfall before the point we couldn't get up on the lower of the 2 falls

The last image is a map of our route in april 2005

Troy Sette and I went a good distance up the left fork some years ago -
above Leontine we encountered a number of small, climbable falls but eventually got tired of the increasing bushwhacking. Be fun to drop into
the left fork from the overhead ridge which is easily accessed via the trail up Castle Canyon.
