What is meant by the term "pack toss"? I've heard it used by people in reference to escaping keeper potholes, but not quite sure how it works.

The idea is to tie your rope to your pack, then toss the pack over the lip of the pothole and use it as a counterweight for your escape. The pack doesn't necessarily have to be very heavy. If the downstream edge of the pothole slopes downward, friction between pack, rope and rock will add more holding power.

Consider this option BEFORE you enter the pothole. You may not be able to throw the pack over the lip from the bottom of the pothole, especially if you're treading water. The toss may be easier from the top of the previous rappel.

Also consider who should go first. Perhaps the lightest person or the best climber. When this person reaches the top, he/she can then add his/her weight to the pack "anchor" for the remaining members of the group.
