View Full Version : Good dry static ropes

Two questions:

1) I've got my eye on a Sterling SuperStaticTM 3/8" as my first canyoneering rope. Does anyone have any experience with this or other Sterling products? Resistance to water absorption is a MAJOR issue for me, and this is one of the few static, rapelling ropes I've seen that actually proclaims itself to have a "dry" core or treatment. Does it work? Is their something better someone can suggest?

Of course there is the Bluewater Canyon Pro but its very expensive and a bit thin (8mm) for my first rope I think.

2) Does anyone make "dry" accessory cord? Anyone know of accessory cords that are more or less prone to absorb water? I plan to carry 100+ft of 8mm accessory for use as handlines, rapelling short drops and to retrieve my main rope when necessary. (I recongize that accessory cord isn't "real" rope and can't be depended on as such, but I think the occasional non-life threatening uses I have in mind are appropriate)

Thanks much for any advice!

Brad,

Nothing to add, just interested to hear some feedback to your questions. I found some static water rescue ropes, but they all lacked the temperature resistance necessary for rappelling.

If you select a rope and can get a quantity deal, I may be interested in purchasing with you. Let me know.

In response to question 2...

Does anyone have any experience with Sterling Accessory Cord? It claims on this website to be dry. Any thoughts?

Or...What about Sterling's 8mm waterline? It's perfect for the water, you just can't rappell on it. Thoughts?

Thanks

Click HERE to see 100% polyester ropes made by Cancord. Haven't tried any yet, but plan to and will post review when available. Polyester doesn't absorb nearly as much water as nylon, BTW.

I found a paper on the net (can't quote it right now as I am at work and it is bookmarked on my home computer) that involved duration of use of static ropes. A recommendation was that a static rope be submerged in water and then air dried prior to the first use. I believe it stated that this would tighten the weave on the sheath and prolong the life of the rope against abrasion. I will post the address of the paper. Any thoughts?
