I receive emails on a fairly regular basis asking if I know of any canyons in such-and-such state, often in the southeast or northeast U.S. Well, I'd like to turn that question around and see if we can come up with at least one canyon in every state. Sound implausable? Remember, canyons can be as simple as 1A. They don't have to be deep. They don't have to be narrow. We can even include "cascading", a variation of canyoneering that involves rappelling over waterfalls that are not in canyons.

This is from a recent email exchange with a student from Massachusetts:

"Closest thing we have is called Purgatory Chasm in south central Massachusetts. It is a short (1/2le) gorge that got carved out in glacial times when a natural dam gave way and the water dug out a ditch about 50-100 yards wide and a half mile long. It's a pretty spot for a hike or picnic or rock-climbing."

I know of people who have done canyons in upstate New York. I've been rafting and climbing in North Carolina and am very sure there is canyoneering or at least cascading terrain there.

Tell us about the canyons and/or cascades in your state or states you have visited.

Another Purgatory Chasm near Newport in RI. Actually carved out by the ocean, but has since become a drainage. One rappel ~20ft. and a 30yd. walk and you're in the ocean. A canyon with tidal action.
