I've made it a point to steer clear of canyoneering forums for the past several months. Even this one. Now back from 3 weeks in Asia, suffering from a bit of jet lag and stuck at this computer; couldn't resist poking in on one of the forums. It occurs to me that it doesn't really matter how much time transpires between visits. What you will find never changes. There are occasional gems of information about current canyon conditions and some fun trip reports. Unfortunately, these gems are often lost amongst the mud and weeds.
Same old bickering between the same old players. Trip report turned into a pissing match between "experts" when one of them noticed a belay violation in a photo. Yet another releasable rope system for "ghosting" canyons. This one a variation of the Stone Knot. Original users sufficiently documented to insure they receive credit for what will certainly become THE technique that revolutionizes canyoneering. YAWN!
Also occurs to me that a person has to be a bit "touched" to spend so much time on internet forums. Is it an addiction? Is there a 12-step program available to help kick the addiction? Feeling a bit guilty for the role I played in establishing internet canyoneering forums, but glad I was able to quit cold turkey.
PS: Not saying I am giving up on this forum, just been extremely busy outside canyoneering.![]()
