Join us for a Winter Canyoneering getaway in Baja California! Work on building a solid canyoneering foundation in an extraordinary environment!
Canyoneering’s Core Fundamentals-
Technical-Possessing good technical canyoneering skills and understanding how they are applied is critical. Rigging, rappelling and down climbing are all relatively simple tasks, but they need to be done with precision and perfection in mind, every time. This is best achieved through formal instruction, particularly at the Core level.
Philosophy- Equally important for safety is having a solid backcountry philosophy. Learning to maintain situational awareness in challenging or dynamic circumstances is a skill. When canyoneering, making good assessments and excellent choices is a process, a conscious effort made with purposeful intent.
This course is designed to provide students with a strong technical skill set and excellent situational awareness. This gives us the confidence to begin linking together a series of excellent choices (weather, group, canyon) and greatly improve our odds of consistently having a safe and empowering canyoneering experience. Lots of fun and cool pics too!!!
Day 1, we need lots of “wall time” in a vertical and free hanging environment. We will spend a full day learning to master the management of ourselves through a variety of technical on rope challenges. This area is located on a pristine white sand beach with easy opportunities for repetition, shade for rest, and turquoise blue water for taking a dip between training blocks. We might need to do a short SUP or swim to that spot this year, depending on the tide….stay tuned. Epic.
Next we want a big day of down climbing. Working on the super efficient management of yourself and partners up through 800 vertical feet of giant white granite obstacles. Countless opportunities for partner assists, belayed up and down climbs, team captures, spotting, etc. In Utah, Beau-Beau is one of my favorite down-climbing canyons for training. “Tolo” is the big Mexican counterpart, with palm trees for anchors and a beautiful stream too! A World class experience.
Finally, it is important to have a good day of wet environment training, including the skills and pro tips to mitigate the typical water obstacles encountered while canyoneering. This is accomplished with a wide variety of in canyon waterfall rappels, chutes, jumps, slides…lot’s of critical skills to engage. This training will take place in Sierra de Las Lagunas, where polished rock and beautiful pools will put us through the tests of a true canyoneering experience. Few groups have ever descended this canyon. Its gorgeous!
If it sounds awesome, it is:) Limited space, let us know if you have questions. Don’t miss out!
Side notes: Regarding Covid, Baja is under similar circumstances as we are here. Folks wear masks while going out and generally play things really smart. This is NOT a rowdy party town (COVID super spreader), rather a semi quiet beach town full of kiteboarding and mountain biking retired folks in bed sometime between 8-10pm. Sorry for those seeking “Margaritaville”, it’s more like Escalante down there, which we LOVE:)
